Is my optician taking advantage of me?

I have recently ordered a pair of high power (minus + astigmatism) high index bifocals. The optician I am working with had given me a quote on the lenses several months prior to my placing the order. When I came back several months later to place the order, I asked the optician about any changes in cost. She said that the lab that she uses did raise their prices. When, right before placing the order, I asked her to give me an exact quote, she simply said that she would honor the original quote and that she would give me the best price she could. When the glasses arrived, the price tag (and this is just for the lenses!) was $600 as opposed $400, which was originally quoted. Furthermore, I feel that one of the lenses is not centered perfectly because the dispersion and limited visual acuity (due to high index) is greater when I slightly turn my head to the left than when I turn it to the right. To be able to see clearly, I basically have to look at the object straight. I have a comparable pair of high index glasses (same power), and I don't have this problem when I wear them. I have brought up the difference in cost and the abnormally limited visual field on one side with the optician. Her response was:

1. She will not take the glasses back under any circumstances because they were custom made and her own costs were very high (I understand her costs were around $200).

2. She is willing to cut the price down the original quote only if I take them as is and walk away.

3. If she has to send them back for a remake or any adjustments, she will charge me the full $600.

I am obviously not happy with the price-quality combination of the product. I have tried to find a compromise. I offered to cover her entire expenses related to the glasses if I could return them and get some of my $ back. I suggested exchanging the glasses for a pair of contacts (which would be cheaper and I would be at loss anyway). The optician would not even consider any of those option.

Bottom line: I pay $600 if any changes need to be made to the glasses, or I pay $400 and walk away with the product I am not happy with and not sure I can wear.

I am trying to work this out in an amiable way because the optician, supposedly, is the best in town at fitting gas perms, which I would like to get.

On the other hand, if I am being taken advantage of, I would like to know so that I won't sink another $400 on the contacts (yes, her quote for gas perms, including the contacts cost and labor was $400).

I would appreciate any feedback/advice, especially from other opticians who are familiar with the intricacies of the trade. Thank you!
Is my optician taking advantage of me?
You should be property fitted/adjusted to your new glasses, or a refund.

You can purchase gas perm contacts online with a prescription at

No labor costs involved with contact lenses... your eye doctor should fit you for free.

Do you ever wonder if there is a reason Bob Barker sometimes paused to finish a game?

I am watching Price is Right and every once in a while, he will pause a min or so before pulling the last tag or removing some item.

I always wondered if there was something happenig we werent seeing. Like a changing of the price.

About half the time the person still wins, but it just seems weird that he seems to stall a lot
Do you ever wonder if there is a reason Bob Barker sometimes paused to finish a game?
I always thought he did that for dramatic effect, or maybe he paused to make sure the cameras were in the right place. Do you dare accuse Mr. Barker of cheating? He's like the patriarch of game shows. No!
Do you ever wonder if there is a reason Bob Barker sometimes paused to finish a game?
He's just helping to build up that incredible suspense. lol
he's the anti-christ.
To ramp up the anxiety of the contestant. Also, to stir up the audience a little more. It also creates tension, excitement, etc. Bob Barker ruled! We'll see how Drew Carrey does.
It is just a technique to build up suspense. The view WANTS to see the price and find out if the contestant has won. Making us wait makes us want to see it more.

Remember, when we were kids how our parents wouldn't let us have dessert until finished with our main course. It made us even that much more eager to get to our dessert.
Suspense. One of my favorite TPIR clips:

Mac Tiger or Mac Leopard?

I am considering getting Mac book installed with Tiger. A lot of ppl are recommending waiting for Leopard release in october. but considering how stable Tiger is (10.4.9), Leopard when it comes out, it will take few months until its fully updated and fully stable.

and the offer for college students this summer (free ipod with mac book purchase), it looks like mac book with tiger is a catch. am also worried that when leopard comes out, the price of Mac books will go higher.

i also read that aside from the new 64-bit platform of leopard (tiger is 32), all other new features of leopard are just added user friendliness to Tiger and not real massive scale change to it.

so my question is, shall i buy a strong stable OS with a free ipod nano and a good price offer, or wait for a new - more friendly but not so stable- OS, later this year with a price tag that *might* be higher?
Mac Tiger or Mac Leopard?
Apple doesn't hike the price of their hardware when the OS is updated. They just sell their hardware with the newer OS as soon as it's ready. My gut tells me you'll want to buy now during the free iPod giveaway. Tiger, 10.4.9 is a nice and stable release, and will continue to be a good OS, even after Leopard comes out. It'll be years before you'll have to have 10.5 to run any application. There are still lots of apps that list 10.2, Jaguar as their minimum OS. Leopard will do lots of cool new things, not the least of which is the use of ZFS, but you can always buy the new OS after it's come out and they've had a chance to resolve some of the bugs that are inevitable with any software release. Get a good case for that nano!
Mac Tiger or Mac Leopard?
Well I think they have updates on all the OS' on the Apple website, incase there are kinks in the Leopard.

That sounds like a good deal though.

Or buy it now, and maybe you could just purchase the other OS later?
i recently bought myself a macbook pro about a week ago and asked myself the same thing prior.

i could either wait to get it when i am in college, by then leopard would come out. however i dont know how much it would cost then. i really only wanted it for the 64 bit.

but i couldnt wait to get a mac so i got it immediately. i got the ipod and a printer both free with the rebates.

my moms friend who works for apple estimated the upgrade price to leopard at nearly or around $1000. i think she was a little tipsy when she said that though.
Amazon.com is taking pre-orders for Mac Leopard;$129

I would buy the system now and update in the future.
I wouldn't wait. Get the Macbook now with Tiger and the free iPod Nano.

If you want to upgrade to Mac OS X Leopard in the future it's probably going to be $69 for students. Which I must say is a very good deal.

Be sure to get your student discount on the Macbook too.

Obama shatters spending record for 1st year presidents. Is this the "hope" and change we can believe in?

President Obama has shattered the budget record for first-year presidents -- spending nearly double what his predecessor did when he came into office and far exceeding the first-year tabs for any other U.S. president in history.

In fiscal 2009 the federal government spent $3.52 trillion -- $2.8 trillion in 2000 dollars, which sets a benchmark for comparison. That fiscal year covered the last three-and-a-half months of George W. Bush's term and the first eight-and-a-half months of Obama's.

That price tag came with a $1.4 trillion deficit, nearly $1 trillion more than last year. The overall budget was about a half-trillion more than Bush's for 2008, his final full fiscal year in office.

Click here to read FOXBusiness.com's Elizabeth MacDonald describe what the interest on the debt can buy.

That's a big increase. But compared with other presidents' first years in office, Obama is running circles around them.

Bush spent $1.8 trillion in 2001, according to government budget figures that have been adjusted for inflation based on 2000 dollars. Using the same formula, former President Bill Clinton spent $1.6 trillion in 1993.

The last president to clock in under $1 trillion was Gerald Ford, who logged a $982 billion budget in 1975. Post-war Dwight Eisenhower even brought Uncle Sam's tab down to $556 billion in his first year, 1953.

Obama's first-year budget, adjusted for inflation, is about five times that. His 2009 budget is also close to 21 percent of that for Clinton's eight years in office -- Clinton's spending added up to $13.5 trillion over his two full terms. Bush spent $16.8 trillion from 2001-2008.

Is this the %26quot;hope%26quot; and change America needs? Or is this just socialist politics as usual?

regardless of how you feel about the source, the truth is the truth. If you can't find any legit source to counter the facts presented here then you lose. Sorry.

Well it has happened, so I guess we have to believe it. I don't believe in it, but we are stuck with it. We are going to pay a big price for all this foolishness for many years to come. What is happening right now is the reason that it is never a good idea to vote democrat.

Here we Go!
He is an incompetent idiot.
its funny how the first post will say that but money has been spent, wtf can they say that is doing any good but bankrupting america
Sure is! Just like he planned. He's left us %26quot;hoping%26quot; we have %26quot;change%26quot; left for a meal.
I cannot answer this question, all I hope is that things will change for the better.
Yes we can!
Good
he lied!!!
Comparing deficit spending in the largest recession in a generation with the spending at the end of the longest economic expansion in history is either very ignorant or very dishonest.

To blame Obama for the spending in a budget prepared and signed by Bush and including the TARP funding is equally ignorant or dishonest.

I will let you tell us which.
You complain about Obama spending the necessary money to get this economy back on its feet, but where were you when Bush spent us so recklessly into debt and in a bigger hole than when Clinton left office?

  • Why the Panic over oil and energy prices?

We are in an era of change, but only some can remember the past, this in turned has changed to finding and resolving conflict, but still there are headlines like this %26quot;Energy fears looming, new survivalists prepare%26quot; By SAMANTHA GROSS, Associated Press Writer.

I would like to just say thank you to Miss Gross for this wonderful line of doom and gloom, what would of been wrong with new green survivalists.

Thanks for reading found the tag line in yahoo.
Why the Panic over oil and energy prices?
I read that article this morning and was curious, so I went to peakoil.com to find out more. I came to the site with an open mind, but after reading the forums.... Let's just say that our survivalists are nothing more than white supremists. They complain about mixing races, this and that, plus they think that anyone who doesn't think like them is a %26quot;lower lifeform%26quot; or an %26quot;animal%26quot;, so seeing so many idiots who believe in this theory completely discredits it for me.
Why the Panic over oil and energy prices?
    hi
I'm not panicing to be honest. But I'm also not getting a raise. My little 4 cylander used to take 40 bucks to fill and now it takes 65. Yes we are in an era of change, but my income isn't changing...so I have reason to worry.
did you fill in your car with regular gaz for 4.19 a gallon today??

i guess not, you must be a millionaire who drives a hummer
Because it has the potential to threaten the american way of ife. No more suburbs, no more 3 large cars in the driveway, going to work on a bycicle, no cheap meat anymore for the BBQ etc. etc.. For a lot of people this is very frightening.
the world is addicted to a drug. its oil!

People fear the withdraw when its gone. Just like a crack addict. Have you ever heard how desperate they get for a fix! The problem There isn't yet anything ready to come on line and replace oil. We knew for a long time we need alternatives. however for some reason. the governments haven't pushed for programs to develop these alternatives! I heard it was because oil is considered to be a stabilizing element to the worlds economy. And if it was suddenly less valuable there could be global turmoil! However the odds are that when we have shortages and eventually none there will be turmoil too!
The oil crisis has brought a lot of poverty, people knows now that our economy is going down the drain, and the cost of living is soaring up, and food is not cheep as it was,and every one is scared to buy any thing, Money is worthless ,and every one get busted with no money ,and have to stay like that until the their check is due ,
Why the panic? Because gasoline will be costing us $6 - $7 gallon, and that is probably sooner than later. Can you afford that? I can't...
    al quada loves it.
Just propaganda by the mass media. And the gullible people suck it up. The media and the socialists (formerly called democrats) want America to fall. And the wimpy new American people are willing to sell out liberty and freedom for total government control over their lives. Pretty sad.

How do you get access to surveillance evidence?

If you are accussed of a crime and a store claims to have you on tape, how do you get access to view tha tape bofore appearing in court without a lawyer? My friend was accussed of changing the tag on a item in a store that cost $6 and the tag when he checked out said $3.99, the cops were called and he was issued a citation to appear in court. the tape was never viewed while he was there. the cops told him that he had to admit to it on the spot or he would be arrested, he had his two kids with him so he said yes. He knows he didnt do it, and would like to view the tape before going to court.

he wants to see how incriminating the tape looks as it was a discount store where you have to dig through bins and racks, so he could have been doing anything and the items in the store always have different prices on the same items, people switch and rip the tags all the time. he wants to plea not guilty but is worried that he may look guilty on the video.
How do you get access to surveillance evidence?
If theres ever a discrepancy on an item marked with 2 prices then leave it in the box and take it to the register, the stores will usually have you pay the lower amount if you argue it. As far as viewing the video tape before the hearing, you need to contact the prosecuting attorney, let them know your representing yourself (Pro Per) and simply ask for a copy of the video,,, yes,,, its that simple. You have the right to view or review all evidence that is to be used against you so that you can provide the best possible defense in a court of law.
