Why is sales tax never shown on the retail price?

What it says on the title. I mean, sales tax where I%26#039;m from is 10%, but it WILL change eventually and I hated doing the math when I went to buy something.

Example: 2 years ago (I think)

Wow, this video game is $34.99, now to just get out my piece of paper and pen, multiply the price by .09, add the price, and $38.14!!!

I mean, in other countries, the sales tax is usually already added on the price tag.|||Manufacturers send their merchandise all over the country. Sales tax is different in each state. This is why there is no tax on the price tag. If your tax is 10%, move the decimal place over to the left one number, and add that to your price. So... for $34.99, the tax would be 3.50. Ten percent is easy to figure out.|||Generally, you will see the sales tax on a receipt but on the bottom of the receipt, if the item is subject to sales tax.

Sales tax would never be Included with the retail price of the item but listed separately.|||BEcause it is a sales tax and amount depends on purchase amount, and sales tax rates vary from state to state, and even county to county

ex: Cook County, IL has higher sales tax than rest of IL, and higher than anywhere else in country

most other countries have VAT, value added tax, which becomes part of purchase price|||because every state has different sales tax rates - sometimes different rates within counties and towns in the same state, some state have NO sales tax - other %26quot;countries%26quot; probably just have one NATIONAL sales tax or VAT - same rate anywhere in that country - The USA doesn%26#039;t do that -sales tax is a state/local issue, not national

if you order online, it%26#039;s going to automatically calculate the sales tax for you if there is any, based on your address|||every state has different rates, and in each state even come cities have rates that are not the same as the state

it would be ludicrous to include the sales tax in the quoted price
